Maria is a transport demand and travel behavior modeller. She is a Lecturer in Transport and Energy and the Head of the Urban Transport and Energy Lab at UCL Energy Institute (London, UK).
Her areas of research include travel behavior, new mobility services, mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) transportation demand modeling, transportation systems analysis, market research and econometrics. She has extensive experience in survey design, sampling design, large dataset handling, data mining and modeling combined revealed preferences and stated preferences discrete choice models, as well as latent variable models in which the attitudes and perceptions of decision makers are taken into account in the choice process.
She has worked on various transportation projects in Europe and worldwide. She organizes and co-organizes workshops and campaigns about active transport, green transportation and road safety.
In 2009 she joined the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC); she participated in ShLOW campaign and run successfully her program in Greece, which in 2010 awarded with the 1st medal in Greece and the 4th in Europe.
In June 2010, she was awarded with the Bronze Medal in Safety/Security pillar in YEAR2010 (Young European Arena of Research 2010 - the pan-European contest for young researchers in the transport sector) for her research “Exploring Teenagers’ Travel and Driving Behavior in Rural Areas”.
In 2013, she was awarded with Best Student Paper Award in Choice Modelling by the International Choice Modelling Conference and Journal of Choice Modelling for the paper "Does Social Networking Substitute for or Stimulate Teenagers' Travel? Findings from a Latent Class Model" (Syndney, 2013).
She also received the 2013 Ryuichi Kitamura Paper Award by the Travel Analysis Methods Section of the Transportation Research Board (Washington DC, 2014) for her paper "Development of a Hybrid Choice Model to Investigatethe Effects of Teenagers’ Attitudes Towards Walking and Cycling on Mode Choice Behavior."
Maria holds a PhD in Travel Behavior Modeling and Decision Sciences from the Department of Shipping Trade and Transport of the University of the Aegean (Chios, GR). She holds a Bachelor on Business Administration (Univ. of Macedonia, 2007) and a Master on Shipping, Trade and Transport (Univ. of the Aegean, 2009). Her PhD thesis is entitled “Development Of Hybrid Models Of Teenager’s Travel Patterns To School and To After-School Activities. Implementations On Road Safety”.
